Maurits Cornelis Escher
(June 17, 1898 - March 27, 1972)

Born in Leuwarden, the Netherlands, Eshcer was the youngest son of four. His father, an engineer, wanted Maurits to peruse a similar profession. But poor marks in school and an interest in art led Escher to seek a career in graphic art.

Much of Escher's work incorporated tessellations and optical illusions done in lithographs or woodcuts.
